feist

Feist seems to be the current indie media darling. Last week, she had glowing profiles in the New York Times and the New Yorker, just in time for the release of her new album, The Remainder, which is out May 1st.

I'm not sure what to make of her new video "1 2 3 4." It looks like a G-rated American Apparel ad. It seems nothing like what I saw when she opened for Rilo Kiley in 2005 -- a stripped down set that featured her, a guitar, and her beautiful vocals on a sparse stage. But the song is catchy:

That was the first Feist video I had seen, but evidently she's no stranger to the group dance number. Here's her video for "Mushaboom."

You beat me to the punch! Awash in work and struggling to catch up on sleep (I need at least 9 hours a day to even pretend to relate to human beings), Feist was my only good idea for a post since you came out to SF!

Personally, I love the video for its simplicity and admittedly amateurish execution (except for the camera operator). It seems like the kind of thing that, with enough time on our hands and deep enough social networks - neither of which, sadly, have been a part of my life since 2004 - we could all pull off. I like that. (I should disclose that besides being blown away by that opener for Rilo Kiley, I'm a sucker for Feist because she's the reason Dan and I even know each other - we met at her show at the Great American in September of '05).

Plus, the song really pulls my pop heartstrings. Music and lyrics. I've got in on loop in the office this week, bopping along in my Aeron. I've seen Feist 3 times since that Rilo Kiley show, and she's done a different production each time. I am impressed by her range, and her self-confidence. How many verifiable chanteuses are we producing in the 21st century, anyway? My only fear is that she might have found her rut with this album, which I've only heard a few songs from...
